Kinoshita scores early but Warriors rally past Muskies in the rain

Ryoto Kinoshita (Sr.-Kanagawa, Japan) scored an early goal but Wisconsin Lutheran College unlocked a tie game with two goals in the second half to defeat the Lakeland University men's soccer team 3-1 Wednesday night at a rainy Taylor Field.

The Warriors won the battle of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference teams both looking for their first win on the league loop and continued their recent mastery in the schools' long-running series. Wisconsin Lutheran defeated Lakeland for the eighth straight time, a streak dating back to 2012.

Kinoshita hit the back of the net just 1 minute, 15 seconds into the match for his third goal of the season after taking the ball away from a defender deep in the Warriors' end. Attacking one-on-one, he shook free for some space and then with the right foot bent a hard shot from nearly 25 yards out just past the defender and goalkeeper and inside the right post to give the Muskies an early lead.

Lakeland (3-8-1 overall, 0-3 NACC) would not score again, though, and the Warriors began to control play and finally broke through in the 35th minute with goal by Justin Kuffler.

Kuffler struck again just under 10 minutes into the second half, scoring his second of the match and fourth of the season to give WLC (5-4 overall, 1-2 NACC) its first lead of the game. It remained a one-goal game most of the way until the Warriors added insurance in the 82nd minute with Alex Rivera scoring his third of the season.

Wisconsin Lutheran finished with a 19-8 advantage in shot attempts. Kinoshita led Lakeland with three shot attempts, all three coming in the first six minutes, while Armando De Luna (So.-Yuma, Ariz.) had another opportunity late in the first half when he hit the post just over a minute after Lutheran's first goal.

Aaron Smith (So.-Lake Geneva, Wis.) made two saves in goal for the Muskies. Erek Lehnen made one save in getting the win for the Warriors.

Lakeland will play its fourth straight match at home when it welcomes Concordia University Chicago on Saturday for a 2 p.m. start at Taylor Field.
