BROOKFIELD, Wis. – Wisconsin Lutheran College scored four times in a span of just over 14 minutes in the second half, breaking open a close game and defeating the Lakeland University women's soccer team 5-1 Wednesday night.
The Warriors won the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup played in the rain and moved to Brookfield Central High School. The contest was moved from WLC's regular home field after heavy rains the night before made the Warriors home turf unplayable.
Lakeland (3-7-1 overall, 2-2 NACC) trailed 1-0 at halftime but had tied the score only minutes before Wisconsin Lutheran went on a scoring binge.
Jenna Borts (
Jr.-Oak Creek, Wis.) scored her first goal of the season in the 48th minute, firing into the bottom right corner of the net from 25 yards out to score with an assist from fellow midfielder
Rachel Hasko (
Sr.-Racine, Wis.).
The Warriors took the lead back less than four minutes later, though, when Kayla Mitchell booted in a crossing pass to make it 2-1 at 51 minutes, 12 seconds of the match. WLC then added another goal in the 56th minute, then another less than four minutes later and its fifth goal at 65:28, the final of its four goals in 14:16.
Lutheran controlled play in the second half, outshooting Lakeland 15-1 over the final 45 minutes, with the Borts goal registering as the Muskies' lone shot.
Erin Tomlinson (
So.-Madison, Wis.) made six saves in goal for Lakeland. Borts led the Muskies with two shot attempts, with Hasko attempting the other shot as Wisconsin Lutheran finished with a 20-3 advantage in shots.
Lakeland is back home Saturday when it hosts Concordia University Chicago for a NACC match scheduled to start at 4 p.m., after the conclusion of the Lakeland/CUC men's match.
