Muskies ease past Scarlet Hawks for fifth straight win

Box Score Lakeland 3 IIT 0  html

Megan Goeser (Jr.-Plymouth, Wis.) hammered home 10 kills and added five blocks and Lakeland University kept rolling in conference play with a three-set sweep of Illinois Institute of Technology Tuesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies cruised to a 25-17, 25-21, 25-19 victory for their fifth straight win in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference competition. Lakeland is three matches over .500 for the first time this season and kept pace just behind the conference leaders, improving to 11-8 overall and 5-1 in the NACC.

The Muskies were not at their sharpest but still had plenty of firepower to keep Illinois Tech (4-13 overall, 1-4 NACC) at bay. Lakeland hit .274 for the match with 41 kills and just nine errors, and also added seven service aces and six team blocks.

Illinois Tech's stoutest challenge came in the second set, when the Scarlet Hawks held a four-point lead on five occasions, the last time at 14-10. Lakeland followed with six straight points, though, and Tech never led again despite drawing even twice, the last time at 19-19.

Goeser finished with 10 kills without an error in 25 swings (.400 hitting percentage) and was one of three Lakeland players with double-digit kills. Abby Baumgartner (Jr.-Kewaunee, Wis.) led with 11 kills and Shannon Bishop (Sr.-River Grove, Ill.) added 10 kills. Bishop also finished with 10 digs, teamed with Goeser on three blocks and also chipped in a team-best three service aces.

Sydney Pingitore (So.-Kenosha, Wis.) also finished with 16 digs and Neenah Primas (Jr.-Oostburg, Wis.) totaled 35 assists plus eight digs.

Karen Marrufo-Zabara led IIT with eight kills and added 12 digs. Sara Hassell and April Williams also added seven kills each. Sinjin Acuna finished with 16 digs.

Lakeland next will travel to St. Louis this weekend to play in the Baden Invite hosted by Washington University St. Louis. The Muskies will open play Friday when they face the University of Dallas at 3 p.m.
