WAUKESHA – The Lakeland University men's basketball team received a rude introduction to its 2019-20 season with a 98-49 loss at Carroll University Sunday afternoon.
Little went right for the Muskies, who fell behind by double digits in the early going and suffered a cold shooting game while Carroll did not. The Pioneers shot 61.4% for the game and made 14 of 25 from three-point range (56.0%) to win going away in the non-conference game.
Carroll (2-0 overall) went on a 15-0 run making six straight shots to take a 23-6 lead less than 6 1/2 minutes into the game. The Muskies would never get closer than 15 the rest of the way, and the Pioneers would make 20 of 30 shots in the first half (66.7%) in building a 52-27 halftime lead.
Lakeland shot just 28.8% and hit 5 of 20 from three-point range (25.0%) and 10 of 24 from the free throw line (41.7%).
Carlos Campos (
Sr.-Janesville, Wis.) was the lone Muskie to score in double figures with 17 points, while
Eddie Burnett (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) and
Sam Kaminski (
Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) chipped in six points each. Kaminski also added a career-high and team-best seven rebounds.
Justin Gruber scored 15 points off the bench to lead six players scoring in double figures for Carroll, which made 35 of 57 shots from the field and also out-rebounded Lakeland 43-30. The Pioneers defeated the Muskies for the second straight year under coach Paul Combs, who was head coach at Lakeland from 1999-2003.
The Muskies will play their second game of the season on Tuesday when they travel to face Finlandia (Mich.) University in Hancock, Mich. Tip time is set for 5 p.m. Central time, 6 p.m. at Finlandia in the Eastern Time Zone.
