Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Muskies beat the cold to top Finlandia for first win

HANCOCK, Mich. – Big performances by Carlos Campos (Sr.-Janesville, Wis.) and Eddie Burnett (So.-Chicago, Ill.) helped the Lakeland University men's basketball team overcome a halftime deficit and defeat Finlandia (Mich.) University 90-74 Tuesday evening at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

Campos scored 29 points, hitting five three-pointers as well as 10 of 11 from the free throw line. Burnett also added 17 points plus 15 rebounds, and the duo helped the Muskies even their record at 1-1 on the season.

Lakeland trailed 40-37 at halftime but outscored the Lions 53-34 in the second half. The Muskies finally started to heat up after three icy-cold shooting performances to start the season, hitting 18 of 42 shots in the second half (42.9%).

A string of four three-pointers in just over two minutes helped Lakeland take the lead for good. Campos hit a pair of triples, big Sam Kaminski (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) stepped out to knock one down and Burnett also added a triple as part of a 14-2 run that gave the Muskies a 51-44 lead.

Deonte Carlton (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) and Isaac Anderson (Sr.-Linden, Wis.) both also added nine points each while Kaminski and Jequan Pegeese (Jr.-Beloit, Wis.) also scored seven points each. Anderson and Kaminski also pulled down eight rebounds apiece, helping the Muskies to a 58-49 rebounding advantage.

Lakeland finished shooting 36.8%, making 28 of 76 shots. The Muskies also converted 26 of 34 from the free throw line (76.5%).

Finlandia shot 34.7%, making 26 of 75 shots, including 12 of 39 from three-point range (30.8%). The Lions drilled seven triples in the first half, and Dylan Underwood just missed a triple-double with 25 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists.

The game began one hour later than its original 6 p.m. Eastern time start due to the Muskies having travel troubles leading to a slightly later arrival.

Lakeland now readies for its home opener Saturday against UW-Stout at 2 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymansium. The Muskies are welcoming men's basketball alumni back that day, and an alumni game will take place at 11 a.m.
