Blue Devils hurry back from deficit late, tip Muskies in overtime

Josh Geiger hit two free throws for the go-ahead points with 42 seconds left in overtime and the University of Wisconsin-Stout completed a comeback from a double-digit deficit late in regulation to defeat Lakeland University 97-94 Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Blue Devils rallied from 12 points down with 2 1/2 minutes left in regulation to spoil the Muskies' home opener. UW-Stout never led until the extra period but found a way to its first win of the season while Lakeland dropped to 1-2 overall.

Geiger broke the game's fourth and final tie with two foul shots in the last minute of overtime, and added another free throw with eight seconds left to give UW-Stout a three-point lead. He missed the second of two shots with eight seconds to play, though, but a three-point attempt to tie by Eddie Burnett (So.-Chicago, Ill.) with three seconds left missed and was rebounded by Stout as time expired.

Lakeland led for all but 34 seconds of regulation and held a three-point lead with less than two minutes left in overtime, too. The Muskies led 45-30 at halftime, took a 49-33 lead early in the second half and seemed to have every answer for the Blue Devils (1-2 overall) until the very end of regulation time.

Lakeland led 79-67 after a layup by Deonte Carlton (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) with 2:35 left in second half, but a frantic press by Stout saw that lead cut to five entering the final minute. The Muskies were still up five after two free throws by Jequan Pegeese (Jr.-Beloit, Wis.) made it 82-77 with 42 seconds left, but Geiger scored consecutive layups and Lakeland missed three of four free throws, including two with 13 seconds left. The Blue Devils tied it with five seconds left on a baseline drive and layup by Kyle Jackson, Stout's first time being tied or better since scoring the game's first two points 16 seconds in.

The teams swapped the lead six times in the overtime, but Lakeland appeared in good shape after Carlos Campos (Sr.-Janesville, Wis.) and Burnett hit back-to-back three-pointers for a 93-90 lead with 2:01 left. Geiger scored Stout's final seven points, though, capping a 27-point performance.

Burnett scored 24 points, Campos added 21, and the two combined for nine of Lakeland's 11 three-pointers as it shot 40.7% from behind the arc (11 of 27). Pegeese also added 13 points plus four steals, Eric Jordan (Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) scored 11 points off the bench and Carlton finished with six points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

The Muskies shot 47.2% in the first half (17 of 36) but cooled off late and finished at 41.8%, making 33 of 79 shots. Lakeland also out-rebounded Stout 45-40, including 20 offensive rebounds.

Jon Ciriacks scored a game-high 29 points for UW-Stout, making 8 of 13 from the field, 5 of 5 from three-point range and 8 of 8 from the foul line. The Blue Devils shot 51.4%, making 36 of 70 shots, and hit 18 of 21 from the free throw line (83.3%).

UW-Stout won the first meeting between the schools since 2010 and the first at Lakeland since their first-ever matchup in 1966 in the NAIA District 14 semifinals. The Blue Devils lead the all-time series 6-1.

The Muskies are on the road Wednesday when they travel to face Lawrence University at 7 p.m. in Appleton.
