Series history: 77th meeting, Edgewood leads 39-36
A series where the Eagles held a healthy lead has closed in recent years as Lakeland has won seven of the last nine contests. Edgewood did win the most recent matchup earlier this calendar year, coming back from seven points down late in regulation and then scoring the final nine points of overtime for a 106-95 victory here at the Woltzen Gymnasium Jan. 9, 2019. The Muskies' last win over the Eagles was an 83-69 victory in Madison Nov. 27, 2018. The series dates back to 1981, and the Muskies won the first six meetings before the Eagles responded with eight straight wins.
Lakeland last time out: Defeated Illinois Tech 73-67 Saturday
The Muskies rallied in the second half to defeat Illinois Tech and push their winning streak to four games. Illinois Tech had a ten-point lead at the break thanks to a 14-2 run to end the first half before the Muskies responded with a 16-1 run of their own, holding the Scarlet Hawks without a field goal for six minutes. Free throws were the difference as Lakeland hit 25 of 36 from the charity stripe to make up for shooting 35.7% from the field.
Jequan Pegeese scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half to lead the Muskies.
Tony White also came off the bench and scored 10 points including three three-pointers.
Edgewood last time out: Defeated Rockford 81-67 Saturday
The Eagles claimed their second Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season in Madison with a 14-point win over the Regents. Edgewood got off to a hot start, opening the game on a 23-4 run and hit almost half of their shots in the game, shooting 49.2% from the field. Ben Seefeld and Ryan Buss led all scorers in the match, scoring 22 and 21 points respectively, and combined for the Eagles' first 11 points. Avery Lyons also added eight assists.
About the Eagles: Edgewood enters with a 2-5 overall record and a 2-2 conference mark. The Eagles have split their last four games with wins over Rockford and Concordia Chicago (86-70). Coming off a sixth-place finish last season and a conference tournament appearance that included a narrow first round loss to eventual conference tournament champion Aurora, the Eagles were picked to finish seventh in the NACC preseason poll of league coaches and sports information directors, one spot behind Lakeland. Ben Seefeld has been one of the conference's most dangerous players offensively, and he enters the game second in scoring in the NACC, averaging 20.4 points per game.
Balanced attack: Lakeland has two players averaging in double figures (
Carlos Campos, 16.2 points per game and
Jequan Pegeese, 12.1 ppg) but the season has quickly born out that any of a number of players can get hot for the Muskies. Through nine games, six different players have led the team in scoring in a game, including Campos, Pegeese,
Eddie Burnett,
Eric Jordan,
Trenton Nickel and
Tony White. In all, ten different players are averaging at least 4.9 points per game. It's not just scoring, either, as seven different players also have led the team in rebounding in a game.
