Series history: 38th meeting, Lakeland leads 27-10
The series between Lakeland and Concordia Chicago dates all the way back to 1950. The Muskies have won 15 of the last 16 meetings, including the previous five. Lakeland also won both matchups last season, including most recently a 100-83 victory at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium on Feb. 4, 2019. The Muskies also won the first meeting last season, edging the Cougars 95-92 on the road in River Forest Dec. 5, 2018. Concordia's last win over Lakeland was an 81-70 victory on Dec. 20, 2016 here on Lakeland's campus for its first win over Lakeland since 2009. The series included a 43-year break from 1957 to 2000, and the two schools have met 24 times since 2000, with the Muskies winning 20.
Lakeland last time out: Lost at Benedictine 93-63 on Saturday
The Muskies played their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener but couldn't hold off a hot-shooting Eagles team in Lisle, Ill., as Benedictine took the lead early and pulled away late in the first half. Lakeland scored the first five points of the game, but Benedictine shot 55% from the field in the first half, including 6 of 13 from beyond the arc, jumping out to a 48-31 halftime lead, and the Muskies got no closer than 14 in the second half.
Eric Jordan led Lakeland in scoring with nine points and was one of 12 players to score for the Muskies, while
Isaac Anderson and
Sam Kaminski collected seven rebounds each.
Concordia last time out: Lost at Edgewood 86-70 on Sunday
The Cougars fell into a deep hole early as Edgewood shot 50% from the field en route to a 54-29 lead at the half. Concordia rallied to within 11 points by midway through the second half but could get no closer as it lost for the first time in NACC play. Jalen Meeks scored 19 points and added five rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Brent Hatten was red-hot from long distance, shooting 5-for-8 from three-point range and tallying 17 points overall.Â
About the Cougars: Concordia comes in with a 1-3 record and picked up its first win in its conference opener against Marian Nov. 23. The Cougars are in their first year under Steve Kollar, who assumes the head post for Concordia Chicago after four seasons at Blackburn (Ill.). Kollar also previously spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Benedictine and was with the Eagles when they won a NACC regular season crown in 2014-15. The Cougars finished 6-19 overall last year and 6-14 in the NACC, and this year were tabbed to finish tenth in the conference's preseason poll of league coaches and sports information directors.Â
Unsettled: The Muskies are a team still searching for an identity and the best combinations early in the season. Nine different players have started at least one game, and only senior
Carlos Campos has started all five games. Campos and
Eddie Burnett also are the only players averaging more than eight points per game, but four different players have led the team in scoring in a game so far and six different players already have tied for game honors in rebounds in the first five games.
