Megan Will (
So.-Lake Mills, Wis.) scored 24 points and led five scoring in double figures and the Lakeland University women's basketball team had a successful Senior Night with an 86-46 win over Alverno College Saturday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies wrapped up their second 20-win season in three years and now will get ready for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament next week, where they will be the No. 2 seed and have a bye into Friday's semifinals. Lakeland found out earlier on Saturday that it had already wrapped up the second seed for the tourney, but the win ensured sole possession of third place in the regular season standings, as well as the program's ninth 20-win season all-time.
Will was nearly automatic near the basket, making 12 of 16 shots from the field. The Muskies shot 57.8% as a team for the game, making 37 of 64 shots, and in particular capitalized on a big size advantage by scoring 56 points in the paint.
Amanda Majewski (
Jr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) also scored 15 points and
Miranda Jacobson (
Sr.-Felch, Mich.),
Kacey Gardner (
Fr.-Evergreen Park, Ill.) and
Morgan Zenon (
Fr.-Twin Lakes, Wis.) also all added 10 points each.
Jacobson also contributed nine rebounds and six assists on Senior Night, and fellow senior
Asia Danforth (
Seymour, Wis.) also added six points, four rebounds and four assists. Lakeland also finished with a 46-22 rebounding advantage, with Will also grabbing seven rebounds and five players total finishing with four boards each.
Karli Selear scored 18 points and made 8 of 15 shots from the field for Alverno (6-19 overall, 5-15 NACC), which shot 33.3% (20 of 60) and went with a six-player lineup. Mackenzie Mathies also added 11 points.
The Muskies will open their NACC Tournament on Friday at 5 p.m., with regular season champion Wisconsin Lutheran College serving as host. Lakeland's opponent is to be determined; it will face the higher-seeded winner from Tuesday's first round games which included No. 3 seed Concordia Wisconsin hosting No. 6 MSOE and fifth-seeded Aurora at No. 4 Dominican. WLC will take on the lower-seeded of the two Tuesday winners, with the second semifinal on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
