Lakeland pounces early to defeat Becker in spring break opener

CLERMONT, Fla. – Madi Olson (So.-Eau Claire, Wis.) and Taylor Bush (Sr.-Waukesha, Wis.) slugged home runs and the Lakeland University softball team opened its spring break trip with a 9-1 victory over Becker (Mass.) College Sunday afternoon as part of the PFX Spring Games.

The Muskies earned their first win of the season in convincing fashion as part of a split on the day. Lakeland lost to the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg 9-5 in its second game Sunday, dropping to 1-3 overall on the season.

Olson hit a two-run home run as part of a quick four-run outburst against Becker (0-1 overall). Cheyenne Mathas (Fr.-St. John, Ind.) also doubled in a run and Bush added a run-scoring single as Lakeland took a 4-0 lead just six batters into the contest.

Bush also hit a two-run homer to left center in the fifth inning to finish 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Mathas also added a sacrifice fly in the second inning and Lakeland finished it off after five innings on the eight-run rule.

Lindsay Cudecki (Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) picked up her first win of the season with her second complete game. She allowed six hits and just one run and allowed only a single run in the second inning that allowed the Hawks to get on the board.

Lakeland was done in by a single big inning in the second game, as Pitt-Greensburg scored all nine of its runs in the third inning. Two errors in the inning allowed the Bobcats to score eight of their nine runs unearned in taking a 9-0 lead.

The Muskies kept the game alive with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Morgan Schiedemeyer (Jr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) singled in a run and Hannah Myre (Jr.-Flat Rock, Mich.) added a two-run double. Schiedemeyer added a based-loaded walk to drive in a run in the sixth, but Lakeland missed out on chances to get even closer by stranding eight over the final three innings.

Schiedemeyer had two hits and also walked twice to reach base in all four of her at bats. Taylar Miller (Fr.-Random Lake, Wis.) also walked twice and scored twice. Leah Binsfeld (So.-Kaukauna, Wis.) took the loss in the circle, allowing nine hits and just the one earned run among nine runs scoring in her 2 2/3 innings. Rikki Vela (Sr.-Waukegan, Ill.) came on in relief and pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out five.

Lakeland is back in action Monday for two games and will move over to play in Kissimmee, Fla., for the next couple days. The Muskies will take on Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University at 10:15 a.m. Central time (11:15 a.m. local time in Florida) and then face Ohio Wesleyan University at 12:30 p.m. Central (1:30 p.m. Eastern).
