KISSIMMEE, Fla. –
Meghan Etten (
Sr.-Elkhorn, Wis.) finished a big game at the plate with a go-ahead run-scoring double and the Lakeland University softball team defeated Westminster (Pa.) College 5-4 in eight innings Tuesday afternoon as part of the PFX Spring Games.
The Muskies gained a split of two games for the third straight day after also falling to the University of Dubuque (Iowa) 4-0 in their first game of the day. Lakeland is now 3-3 on its spring break trip to Florida and 3-5 overall on the season.
Etten went 3-for-5 with a single, double and triple and three RBIs in the win over the Titans. She tripled to drive in two runs to get the Muskies on the board in the top of the sixth as Lakeland scored four times to come back from a 4-0 deficit. The senior then doubled with two outs in the top of the eighth to send home
Lexia Upson (
Jr.-Waterford, Mich.) for a one-run lead that held up when
Lindsay Cudecki (
Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) completed a sparkling three-inning relief stint by shutting the door in the bottom of the inning.
The Titans started the inning with a runner at second under international tiebreaker rules and immediately bunted the runner over to have the tying run at third with one out. Cudecki induced a pop up and a ground out to end it, though, finishing off three hitless to earn her second win of the season.
Cheyenne Mathas (
Fr.-St. John, Ind.) and
Amber Andersen (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) also drove in runs in the sixth during the Muskies' rally. Andersen and
Morgan Schiedemeyer (
Jr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) both had two hits each as part of a 12-hit attack that took time to bear fruit, with Lakeland posting seven hits over the first five innings without a run.
The Muskies were due for an offensive outburst after a tough showing in the first game against Dubuque, as Spartans pitcher Lexi Schmidt tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Andersen had the lone hit to break up the no-hitter in the fourth inning. Dubuque scored a single run in the second and then three more in the fifth as
Rikki Vela (
Sr.-Waukegan, Ill.) took the loss while allowing all four runs (three earned) in 4 2/3 innings.
The Muskies get a day off on Wednesday before returning to play Thursday. Lakeland will face the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall (Pa.) College at 12:30 p.m. Central time (1:30 p.m. local time in Florida) and then will take on Marywood University (Pa.) at 2:45 p.m. Central (3:45 p.m. Eastern).
