Raiders outlast Muskies despite Vanderwaal’s career high

MILWAUKEE – Nathan Vanderwaal (Jr.-Rockford, Ill.) sent home a career-high 19 kills but Milwaukee School of Engineering won the final two sets to rally for a five-set win over the Lakeland University men's volleyball team Wednesday night at MSOE's Hotchkin Arena.

The Muskies won the first and third sets but the Raiders came back for a 29-31, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 15-12 victory. MSOE-the 12th-ranked team in the latest AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 15 Coaches Poll-completed a sweep of Lakeland, which dropped to 7-10 overall and is now 3-7 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

Vanderwaal finished with his fourth straight match with at least 10 kills and bested his previous career high of 14 set three times earlier this season. He also added seven digs and four blocks (one solo, three assisted).

Lakeland won an extra-long first set, holding on after MSOE (14-6 overall, 8-2 NACC) came back from four point down to pull ahead late. The Muskies fought off three set points, and then held a 17-13 lead in the second set and a 2-0 match lead in their sights before the Raiders roared back to win.

Lakeland returned the favor by rallying from 19-17 down in the third set to win, but the Raiders won a close fourth set and led from the start of the fifth, building a 4-0 lead and then keeping an edge as the teams exchanged sideouts most of the rest of the way.

Dakota Hunter (Sr.-Waukesha, Wis.) also added a season-high 17 kills, and the Muskies hit at a .222 rate (58 kills, 26 errors), bettering MSOE in that category. The Raiders hit .207 with 60 kills and 29 errors, but also added seven service aces.

Desmond Williams (Sr.-Riverside, Calif.) also added nine kills plus four blocks (one solo, three assisted). Cameron Ekum (So.-Mukwonago, Wis.) posted 31 assists and 13 digs while Addison Mertler (Sr.-Boca Raton, Fla.) also added 16 assists. J.T. Levitt (Sr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) added 16 digs.

Jacob Sirny led MSOE with 15 kills and was one of four in double figures in that category. Setter Quin Krisik also added eight kills, 51 assists and 16 digs.

The Muskies are right back in action Thursday night when they host NAIA member Graceland (Iowa) University at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
