Sabres trek east on Highway 23 to spar with Muskies

The Lakeland University men's volleyball team welcomes its nearest rival when it hosts Marian University Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies will play their second-to-last home match of the season when the Sabres head over from Fond du Lac for the teams' second Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup this season. Marian won the first in four sets, adding to the squads' short but growing history of long matches.

Lakeland (10-12 overall, 4-9 NACC) is coming off one of the most dominant hitting performances in its six-year varsity history in a three-set sweep of Concordia Chicago on Saturday. Lakeland hit .413 for the match with 41 kills and just 10 errors in 75 attacks, the second-best hitting mark in a match since moving to varsity status in 2014. The Muskies also served a season-high 11 aces.

Marian (10-11 overall, 8-5 NACC) also played Saturday, when it lost a four-set match to nationally ranked Benedictine. The Sabres snatched the first set away from the Eagles but eventually fell 22-25, 25-11, 25-20, 25-21 to the team last week ranked fifth in the AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 15 Coaches Poll.

This is the seventh meeting all-time between the two programs. Lakeland holds a 4-2 lead, though Marian has won the last two meetings, including a 25-16, 30-32, 25-21, 26-24 win on Feb. 20. Five of the six meetings between the teams have gone at least four sets, including a pair of five-set matches last year.
