Binsfeld, top of the order get job done as Muskies split with Pointers

STEVENS POINT – Cheyenne Mathas (Fr.-St. John, Ind.) doubled twice and drove in three runs as part of a three-hit game and the Lakeland University softball team earned a doubleheader split against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a 7-1 win Wednesday afternoon.

Mathas went 3-for-4 at the plate, Taylor Bush (Sr.-Waukesha, Wis.) added a pair of hits and three RBIs and Leah Binsfeld (So.-Kaukauna, Wis.) steered out of trouble time and again as the Muskies won the nightcap of the twinbill. UW-Stevens Point won the first game 7-0, but Lakeland finished with a day split for the sixth time this season in moving to 6-8 on the year.

Mathas helped the Muskies blow the game open in the later innings, first with a double to score Meghan Etten (Sr.-Elkhorn, Wis.) in the fifth to make the score 4-0. She then added a two-run double in the sixth, driving in Etten and Sabrina Wickman (So.-Quinnesec, Mich.).

Bush drove in runs with infield singles in both the first and third innings, the first getting Lakeland on the board and the second pushing the lead to 3-0. She also added a sacrifice fly to score Wickman in the sixth inning.

Etten also added two hits and scored three times, and Wickman also went 1-for-1, reached after being hit by a pitch and scored twice. Collectively, the top four in the order of Etten, Wickman, Mathas and Bush combined for eight of the Muskies' 10 hits, three doubles, six RBIs and six runs scored.

Binsfeld ensured that Lakeland's offensive output would stand up with her third complete game of the season. She scattered 12 hits and stranded ten Pointer runners, striking out four and allowing just a solo homer by Sammy Buerger in the fifth inning.

UWSP (10-8 overall) had the upper hand in the first game, scoring three times in the first inning and adding two more runs in both the second and fourth frames. The Muskies were held to just a pair of singles for the game and only once advanced a runner to third base, after Morgan Schiedemeyer (Jr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) singled to lead off the second and eventually moved to third on a wild pitch before the inning ended.

Haley Barnes pitched the complete game shutout for the Pointers, while Lindsay Cudecki (Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) took the loss, allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Rikki Vela (Sr.-Waukegan, Ill.) came on in relief and tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and just two earned runs.

Lakeland will open the home portion of its schedule tomorrow, as its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Concordia University Chicago has been moved up two days due to forecasted threatening weather on Saturday. The first game will start at 2 p.m.
