Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Muskies stay a step ahead of Falcons in NACC sweep

Dakota Hunter (Sr.-Waukesha, Wis.) led three players with at least 10 kills and the Lakeland University men's volleyball team passed a test from Concordia University Wisconsin for a three-set win Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies scored a 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 win for their second straight Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win and third straight win overall. Lakeland built on two wins over the weekend and pulled even with Concordia in the conference standings, with both teams now 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the NACC.

The Muskies trailed early in all three sets and were tied on 17 different occasions through the three sets but slowly built a working margin in all three sets. Lakeland never led by more than seven points in any set, briefly pulling ahead 20-13 in the first before the Falcons pulled within three late and stayed close in both of the ensuing two sets.

Desmond Williams (Sr.-Riverside, Calif.) and Nathan Vanderwaal (Jr.-Rockford, Ill.) got the offense going early, combining for seven kills in the first set, including Williams delivering the final blow on the second set point to give the Muskies the early match lead. Hunter then heated up with five kills early in the second set and finished with 11 kills, a good showing after missing seven matches in February due to injury.

Vanderwaal and Williams also added 10 kills each as Lakeland hit .227 as a team with 41 kills and 16 errors.

Cameron Ekum (So.-Mukwonago, Wis.) posted 31 assists and six digs while J.T. Levitt (Sr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) totaled a team-high 13 digs, all coming in the final two sets. Tali Coleman (Sr.-Honolulu, Hawaii) also added four block assists as the Muskies posted seven team blocks.

Sam Rovik led Concordia with 11 kills while James Althoff added nine kills plus a match-high 14 digs. Lakeland improved to 3-0 all-time against the Falcons' second-year program, which has already far exceeded its win total from all of 2018 when it went winless in 26 matches.

Lakeland is home again Saturday night when it welcomes nationally ranked Benedictine University for a 7 p.m. start.
