CHICAGO –
Collin Schutz (
So.-Saint Amant, La.) finished with five hits on the day but Lakeland University was defeated twice by Illinois Institute of Technology Monday afternoon in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference baseball play.
The Scarlet Hawks cruised to an 11-5 win in the first game of the doubleheader and then held on for a 12-10 win in the second game. First-year conference member Illinois Tech swept the first-ever meetings between the two schools as NACC foes.
Schutz helped set the table for the top of the order all day, with five hits plus a walk in his eight plate appearances. He went 2-for-3 in the first game with a walk, a run batted in and a run scored, and he also was 3-for-4 in game two with two doubles and two runs scored.
Lakeland (5-22 overall, 5-11 NACC) nearly matched Illinois Tech hit-for-hit on the day, with 11 hits in the first game and ten more in the second, both times just two hits less than the Scarlet Hawks. The Muskies stranded 14 runners in the first game, though, and also surrendered four home runs.
Lakeland had three home runs of its own on the day, including a three-run blast by
Nathan Hemmerling (
Fr.-Riverside, Calif.) in the first contest.
Justin Wahl Adame (
So.-Riverside, Calif.) and
Connor Hilburn (
Jr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) also added homers in the second game.
Illinois Tech (15-17 overall, 7-9 NACC) scored in bunches in both games, including a pair of four-run outbursts in the first and three runs in three separate innings in the second. Michael Courtney totaled seven hits over the two games, including a homer in the opener and two two-run singles in the second.
Hilburn and
Jack Banks (
Jr.-Mountain View, Calif.) both had three-hit days, with Hilburn scoring twice and Banks driving in two.
Mason Pechy (
Jr.-Diamond Bar, Calif.) took the loss in the first game, allowing five runs in two innings, while
Noah Suissa (
So.-Belmont, Calif.) was the losing pitcher in game two with two runs allowed in two-thirds of an inning.
Lakeland is back on the field tomorrow when it hosts Ripon College for a non-conference twinbill starting at 1 p.m.
