Red Hawks get best of Muskies twice in non-conference play

The Lakeland University baseball team received home runs by Nathan Hemmerling (Fr.-Riverside, Calif.) and Travis Regalado (Sr.-Willcox, Ariz.) but lost twice to Ripon College Tuesday afternoon in non-conference games on the Lakeland campus.

The Red Hawks won both ends of the doubleheader, posting a 4-1 win in the first game and a 9-2 victory in the second. The first game was played to seven innings with the second game going a full nine innings.

Hemmerling hit a solo home run in the first game and Regalado sent a homer out to left field in the second. The Muskies (5-24 overall) weren't able to generate enough runs besides those two scores, though, missing golden opportunities in both games.

Lakeland loaded the bases with nobody out once in each game but generated just one run out of them, when Regalado scored on a balk in the second game.

The Muskies especially had a real chance to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth in game one. Lakeland trailed just 2-1 at that point and put runners on each base with no outs, but paid for a baserunning error that led to a double play and were unable to score.

Regalado finished with four hits on the day, including two in each game. Hemmerling and Jack Banks (Jr.-Mountain View, Calif.) added three hits each.

Connor Hilburn (Jr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) took the loss in the opener but pitched a complete game, allowing 10 hits and four runs while striking out six.

The Muskies have another non-conference doubleheader Thursday when they host Maranatha Baptist University for two seven-inning games starting at 1 p.m.
