VERONA, Wis. –
Nathan Hemmerling (
Fr.-Riverside, Calif.) delivered one of the most overpowering pitching performances in school history,
Travis Regalado (
Sr.-Willcox, Ariz.) set a new school career home runs record and Lakeland University earned its first win of the season with a 10-1 victory over Edgewood College Saturday afternoon.
Hemmerling struck out 17 batters in eight innings as the Muskies picked up their first victory under first-year coach
Logan Mann in the first game of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference twinbill. The Eagles came back for a 10-8 win in the second game to salvage the split on the day.
Hemmerling went eight innings and allowed five hits and one run without a walk for his first collegiate win. His single-game strikeout total is the third-most in school history, and most since 2003. Steve Plucinski set the school mark for whiffs in a game with 22 against Edgewood April 29, 2003, and he also struck out 19 against Marian University ten days later on May 9, 2003.
Hemmerling had struck out 21 in his first three collegiate starts over 16 1/3 innings. He struck out six of the first eight hitters he faced, and later fanned seven in a row at one point over the fourth through sixth innings.
Regalado went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in during the first game, and that was just a warmup for the second game when he went 5-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored. That included a two-run home run in the third inning, which marked his 17th career homer as a Muskie and broke a tie with John Ripka (1992-95), Andy Felder (1997-2001) and Matt Frelich (1999-2002) for most homers in school history.
The Muskies had a chance for the sweep, building a 6-2 lead in the fourth inning of the second game before Edgewood (4-13 overall, 2-4 NACC) rallied. The Eagles scored eight runs from the fourth inning through the seventh and would win despite Lakeland outhitting the hosts 16-11.
Connor Hilburn (
Jr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) also had four hits in the second game and
Justin Wahl Adame (
So.-Riverside, Calif.) added three hits and scored three times. Hilburn also added two hits in the opener and
Jack Banks (
Jr.-Mountain View, Calif.) and
Alberto Oliveras (
So.-Fort Myers, Fla.) both had three hits in the first game, including Oliveras hitting a two-run home run.
Lakeland is back home tomorrow when it hosts Marian University for a doubleheader starting at noon.
