Muskies top Sabres in twinbill opener before rains wash out second game

Box Score Alberto Oliveras (So.-Fort Myers, Fla.) hit a booming two-run double for insurance runs that would come in big late and the Lakeland University baseball team picked up a win over Marian University before the rains came Sunday afternoon.

The Muskies defeated the Sabres 7-5 in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader between the teams. Light rains turned heavy shortly after the completion of the opener, though, and the second game was postponed and moved to Monday afternoon 8 at 3 p.m.

With rain in the forecast, the twinbill started 25 minutes early, and that lead time allowed just enough for the teams to complete their first game before an intermittent light rain in the late innings picked up.

Lakeland won for the second time in two days, taking advantage of its offensive opportunities to score multiple runs in three different innings. The Muskies scored twice in the first, put up three runs in the second to answer two by the Sabres in the top of the second, and then added two more in the sixth to build a 7-2 lead.

Olivares finished with two hits on the day, including a double to right in the sixth to score Collin Schutz (So.-Saint Amant, La.) and Chase Grasso (Fr.-McHenry, Ill.). Those runs proved important when Marian (10-8 overall, 2-4 NACC) came back with three runs in the top of the seventh, including a solo home run by Jake Arens and a sacrifice fly by Michael Snow. Further damage was avoided, though, when Jonah Landowski fell down rounding third base following a hit, and he was thrown out trying to get back to the bag.

Travis Regalado (Sr.-Willcox, Ariz.) added an RBI triple, Connor Hilburn (Jr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) drove in a run with a long double and Oliveras and Nathan Hemmerling (Fr.-Riverside, Calif.) both added two hits. The Muskies were outhit 11-7 but stranded just five runners to 12 left on base by the Sabres.

On the mound, a trio of pitchers chipped in for Lakeland. Carter Chapman (So.-Costa Mesa, Calif.) started and pitched the first 3 1/3 inning, allowing four hits and two runs (none earned). Ryan Oharriz (Sr.-Pembroke Pines, Fla.) came on and threw the next 3 2/3, allowing six hits and three runs with two strikeouts to earn the victory.

With a two-run lead entering the eighth inning, Noah Suissa (Belmont, Calif.) took over, and the sophomore pitched the final two innings for his first career save. Suissa one baserunner with two outs in each inning but worked out of both, including getting Aaron Schauer to fly out to end the game.

Sean Meyer went 3-for-5 and scored two runs to lead Marian offensively. Starting pitcher Zach Sandoval took the loss, pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing seven hits and seven runs (four earned) with four strikeouts and four walks.
