Marian strikes early to gain series split with Lakeland

Marian University pitcher Garrett Martin pitched six shutout innings and received plenty of run support early as the Lakeland University baseball team was defeated 10-0 Monday afternoon.

The Sabres cruised to a win in seven innings in the contest that was rescheduled to Monday after the second game of the teams' Sunday doubleheader was rained out. Marian gained a split of the teams' Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference series after Lakeland won yesterday's opener.

Martin allowed just two hits over six innings, striking out 11 and walking five. The Muskies (2-15 overall, 2-6 NACC) never got a runner past second base after the second inning, missing on their best threats in the first and second innings.

Lakeland stranded four runners over the first two innings, putting runners at first and second with nobody out in the first and getting runners to second and third in the second. Martin snuffed out both potential rallies, striking out five in the first two innings, including three straight to end the first.

The Sabres (11-8 overall, 3-5 NACC) took advantage of their early chances, scoring four times in the first and three more in the second to build a quick 7-0 lead. Sean Meyer delivered the first of his three doubles, driving in two runs
in the first to open the scoring, and Matthew Nordlund also added a two-run double in the first. Jake Arens followed with a two-run home run in the second, chasing Lakeland starter Connor Hilburn (Jr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) after 1 2/3 innings.

Justin Wahl Adame (So.-Riverside, Calif.) and Mason Valenstein (Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) had the lone hits for the Muskies, while Alberto Oliveras (So.-Fort Myers, Fla.) also reached twice on walks.

Jordan Johnson (Jr.-Riverton, Utah) came on in relief of Hilburn and pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs. Tayler Johann (Jr.-Colleyville, Texas) also pitched a scoreless seventh with a strikeout.

Meyer went 4-for-4 for Marian with the three doubles plus three runs scored. Nick Dugandzic added three hits and Travis Slywka went 2-for-3 with a solo home run.

Lakeland is back on the field Tuesday when it hosts Carthage College for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
