Lakeland University will induct four standouts, who represented two sports, into its Athletic Hall of Fame this fall.

The class includes:
- Tesfa Smith, a 1998 graduate, for football.
- Brent Luebke, a 2004 graduate, for football.
- Renee (Steinert) Bowerman, a 2005 graduate, for women's basketball.
- Kristi (Thill) Bachar, a 2006 graduate, for women's basketball.

An induction banquet will he held on Friday, Oct. 11, as part of Homecoming weekend. Reservations are required. Details will be announced closer to the date.

The incoming class increases membership in Lakeland's Hall of Fame to 176.

Smith is among the football program's most decorated defensive players. A four-year starter at linebacker, he was chosen as Illini-Badger Football Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a junior and senior and was a two-time All-IBFC first team honoree.

In 39 career games, Smith had 286 tackles (164 solo, 122 assisted), 24 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks and five fumble recoveries. He had 80-plus tackles in both his junior and senior seasons.

Smith received his bachelor's degree in marketing and international business with a minor in Spanish. He later earned a master's degree from Saginaw Valley State University in 2001 with an emphasis in business administration.

Smith has spent nearly two decades as a college football coach. He is currently in his fifth season as defensive line coach at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich. He has helped the program to numerous NCAA Division II playoff appearances, including a national semifinal appearance in 2016 and the national quarterfinals in 2017.

Prior to Ferris State, Smith spent nearly 14 years on the Saginaw Valley State coaching staff, helping the Cardinals to unprecedented success in a variety of roles including coaching linebackers, running backs and tight ends. He also served as defensive coordinator at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill.

Smith and his wife, Brooke, have three children and reside in Big Rapids, Mich.

Luebke is one of the most prolific quarterbacks in Lakeland history. He is third in career passing yards (6,478), total offense (7,346), passing completions (540) and passing attempts (992) and fifth in passing touchdowns (48).

He was named IBFC Offensive Player of the Year and first-team All-IBFC in 2003 after helping lead the team to an 8-2 finish, the Muskies' best record since 1997, and a second-place finish in the IBFC. He led the IBFC with an average of 253.2 total yards per game and 211.6 passing yards per game.

That 2003 team outscored its opponents 401-164, scoring more than 50 points in four games and leading the conference in total offense (436.9 yards per game) and passing yards per game (221.5).

He was first-team All-IBFC at quarterback as a junior, second-team as a sophomore and honorable mention as a freshman.

Luebke also played basketball for four years, serving as a team captain and was part of two conference championship teams.

Luebke lives in Land O' Lakes, Wis., and works at Schneider National in Green Bay, Wis. He previously worked as a special education teacher, was head football coach at Two Rivers High School, his alma mater, was an assistant football coach at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and coached football for three seasons at Lakeland.

Bachar and Bowerman provided a potent inside-outside combination for the women's basketball program in the early 2000s.

Bowerman is among the most accomplished post players in women's basketball history. In just three seasons at Lakeland, she is seventh in career scoring (1,145 points) and rebounds (602) and second in career blocks (132).

A three-time first-team All-Lake Michigan Conference honoree, Bowerman was 2004-05 LMC Player of the Year as a senior along with third-team All-d3hoops.com All-Central Region honors. She helped lead the 2003-04 team to the LMC regular-season and conference tournament championships and the program's fourth NCAA Division III Tournament appearance.

She is among Lakeland's season leaders in rebounds and blocks, and also finished in the top five in the conference in scoring, rebounds, field goal percentage and blocks both her junior and senior seasons.

Bowerman is married to 2005 Lakeland graduate Rick Bowerman and they have three young children – Adrian, Clare and Gina. She is a customer service sales and marketing manager for Hiawatha Communications in Munising, Mich.

Bachar is one of the women's basketball program's top point guards. She is the career leader with 157 3-pointers and is seventh in career assists (284), eighth in career scoring (1,133 points) and ninth in career steals (158). She was a two-time first-team All-LMC selection (2002-03 and 2005-06), and earned All-Rookie recognition and was honorable mention All-LMC as a freshman.

She was a starter on three NCAA Tournament qualifiers, helping lead her freshman, junior and senior teams to regular season conference titles and conference tournament championships. She started as freshman on the 2001-02 team that set a school record for wins (26) and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. She sat out the 2004-05 season due to an injury.

Bachar is married to Michael Bachar, who works at Lakeland as a Success Coach and earned his bachelor's (2005) and master's (2010) degree at Lakeland. They have two young children, Kaelyn and Landon. She is principal at Campbellsport Middle School.
