ASHLAND, Wis. – Freshman
Alessandro Bianchi (
Venice, Italy) scored the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute and the Lakeland University men's soccer team recorded its first win of the season, edging Northland College 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
Bianchi's first collegiate goal was a big one as the Muskies wrapped up a good road trip north. Lakeland finished with a win and a tie in two matches of the Northland Invitational, following up a scoreless tie with Finlandia (Mich.) University Saturday with a road victory.
Ryoto Kinoshita (
Sr.-Kanagawa, Japan) assisted on Bianchi's goal at 73 minutes, 47 seconds of the match as Bianchi came up from his defensive right back position and snapped a 1-1 tie. Northland (1-1 overall) had previously tied the match early in the second half when Jonah Evans scored in the 55th minute.
Lakeland scored first and its first goal of the season when
Bonny Figueroa (
Sr.-El Cajon, Calif.) tallied an unassisted goal in the first half at 30:37.
The Muskies outshot the LumberJacks 18-8 for the match, including a 10-2 advantage in the first half before play evened up in the second half. Figueroa fired four shots and Bianchi, Kinoshita and
John Bentler (
Sr.-Seattle, Wash.) all added three shots each.
Alex Vanden Avond (
So.-Luxemburg, Wis.) and
Aaron Smith (
So.-Lake Geneva, Wis.) shared goalkeeping duties, with Vanden Avond making one save in the first half and Smith stopping three shots in the second half in getting his first collegiate win in goal.
Lakeland is on the road again on Wednesday when it travels to face Lawrence University in Appleton at 7 p.m.
