Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Muskies start hot but Vikings come back in Sunday women’s soccer contest

Allison Morgan (Fr.-Fredericksburg, Va.) scored her first collegiate goal as part of a flying start for Lakeland University but visiting Lawrence University carried play in the second half in defeating the Muskies 4-2 Sunday evening at Taylor Field.

Lakeland scored twice in the game's first 5 minutes, 36 seconds, part of a quick offensive start by both teams. The Vikings weathered the Muskies' early blitz, though, and scored twice in the second half of a game that was tied at halftime.

Lawrence continued a good start to its season, improving to 4-2 overall one year after a winless 0-18 season. Lakeland dropped to 1-4-1 overall with its third straight loss, and also remained winless all-time against the Vikings despite the teams playing a competitive contest once again, just as they did in their previous three meetings over four years where three matches were decided by a total of four goals.

The Muskies struck early, needing just 2:42 to get on the board. From near the left edge of the midfield circle, Amanda Buckler (So.-Sheridan, Wyo.) sent a diagonal pass into the box that got through to Rachel Hasko (Sr.-Racine, Wis.), who held off a defender and popped a shot past Lawrence keeper Sarah Yochem for a quick 1-0 lead.

The Vikings answered just over two minutes later when Ellie Younger crossed a pass into the box that Hallie Sogin redirected to Samantha Tolu, whose goal tied it at 1-1. Lakeland was back on the board again less than a minute later, though, with Hasko this time sending a gorgeous ball up the middle through the defense to Morgan on the run. The freshman ran onto the ball and one-timed a shot past Yochem into the left corner of the net to give the Muskies a 2-1 lead.

Lawrence tied the match in the 23rd minute, when Tolu broke in front to intercept a pass and then sliced through the Muskies defense, brought goalkeeper Erin Tomlinson (So.-Madison, Wis.) out and dribbled around her before scoring her second of the match.

The game remained tied into the 60th minute when the Vikings went up for good. Tolu passed way ahead from midfield and Hallie Sogin got to the ball just before both defender Asia Danforth (Sr.-Seymour, Wis.) and goalkeeper Emely Ortega (So.-South Beloit, Ill.), sending it past the latter for the goal. Lawrence added an insurance goal nine minutes later off a corner kick, as Blake and Ellie Younger worked a give and go with Blake dribbling into the box uncontested and scoring from 12 yards out.

Lawrence finished with a 20-9 shots advantage, including 10-3 in the second half, when the Muskies did not put a shot on goal. Tomlinson made two saves in the first 34 minutes before giving way to Ortega, who made five saves in 56 minutes.

Lakeland is back on the field Saturday when it hosts Concordia University Wisconsin in its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener at Taylor Field at 4 p.m.
