Lakeland men’s soccer drops 2-0 decision Maranatha Baptist

WATERTOWN – Maranatha Baptist scored its first goal with some good fortune and added an insurance goal late to defeat the Lakeland University men's soccer team 2-0 Thursday evening in a non-conference match.

The host Sabercats scored on a Lakeland own goal in the 16th minute for what proved to be the decider. Maranatha Baptist avenged a 3-0 loss to the Muskies last year and dropped Lakeland to 2-4-1 overall on the season.

The Muskies played Maranatha (3-3 overall) on mostly even terms and outshot the Sabercats 4-2 in the first half. Ryoto Kinoshita (Sr.-Kanagawa, Japan) had an early chance less than 10 minutes in and Andres Gonzalez (Fr.-Jamul, Calif.) added a shot midway through the half.

Maranatha Baptist took a 1-0 lead into halftime, though, and came out on the attack in the second half. Goalkeeper Aaron Smith (So.-Lake Geneva, Wis.) made three saves in the first 15 minutes and Lizandro Jimenez (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) also cleared away a shot off a rebound.

The Sabercats outshot the Muskies 13-6 in the second half and broke through with a second goal in the 73rd minute. Zeke Steuerwald scored with an assist from Braeden Hansel at 72:53, and Maranatha held the rest of the way to clinch the win.

Kinoshita finished with five shots all on goal for Lakeland. Smith made five saves in goal. Tim Kinzler made six saves to get the shutout for Maranatha Baptist, which outshot the Muskies 15-10, including a 9-7 edge in shots on goal.

Lakeland is right back on the field Saturday when it hosts Beloit College at 1 p.m. at Taylor Field.
