Erin Tomlinson (
So.-Madison, Wis.) made 12 saves and stifled a number of attempts from close range but the Lakeland University women's soccer team was defeated by Milwaukee School of Engineering 5-0 Wednesday under the lights at Taylor Field.
The Muskies put up a fight against one of the top contenders in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, withstanding a number of corner kicks by the visitors and an overall possession disadvantage against an experienced team. MSOE scored three times in the early stages and then added two goals in the final minutes to send Lakeland to 1-6-1 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The Raiders finished with a 28-2 advantage in shot attempts and attempted 19 corner kicks, including 14 in the first half. A corner got MSOE (4-3-1 overall, 1-0 NACC) on the board first in the fourth minute when Jeray Riffel's service from the left corner was knocked in by Megan Core for her first goal of the season.
Riffel would have a role in four of the Raiders' five goals, finishing with four assists, including three in the first half. Goals by Caitlin LeVasseur in the 18th minute and Nicole Robb just over seven minutes later also came via Riffel assists and MSOE took a 3-0 halftime lead.
The Muskies made their way into the MSOE zone a couple times in the second half. Their first quality chance of the game came in the 55th minute when
Abby Gastrau (
So.-Hartford, Wis.) fired from the middle of the box but was stopped.
Tomlinson stopped seven shots in the second half and the Raiders were kept quiet until less than 10 minutes remained, when Josie Kunz took advantage of a turnover and fired from 20 yards out for a 4-0 lead. The final game came less than two minutes later when the Muskies were unable to control Riffel's cross into the box and Jade Becknell cleaned it up for the goal.
Lakeland continues its homestand Saturday when it welcomes Rockford University for an 11:30 a.m. kickoff that begins a women's/men's soccer doubleheader with the Regents and a Taylor Field tripleheader that day, with the Muskies football team taking on UW-Platteville in the evening after the soccer matches.
