Abby Gastrau (
So.-Hartford, Wis.) scored her first collegiate goal and also added two assists and the Lakeland University women's soccer team rallied to defeat Alverno College 4-2 Sunday afternoon at a rainy Taylor Field.
The Muskies once again had a number of players make significant contributions and had four different players score goals for the second straight day. Lakeland won its second match in two days and improved to 3-6-1 overall and evened its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference mark at 2-2.
The Muskies also rallied for a win from behind for the first time this season. Lakeland trailed Alverno (4-5 overall, 0-2 NACC) by scores of 1-0 and 2-1 but scored three times in the second half to pull away.
Gastrau scored what proved to be the winning goal in the latter stages of the second half, when she took advantage of a rebound off a shot by
Allison Morgan (
Fr.-Fredricksburg, Va.) and scored at 72 minutes, 1 second of the match. She also was involved in an insurance goal coming just over two minutes later in similar fashion, when Morgan's shot in the box was blocked but went right to Gastrau. The midfielder quickly unloaded from the right side and sent a shot that found the net with a back-foot flip by
Haley Rich (
West Chicago, Ill.) for the freshman's first collegiate goal.
Lakeland controlled possession most of the match, outshooting Alverno 34-11, including a 21-7 margin in shots on goal, and also posted a 13-7 advantage in corner kicks. The Inferno took the early lead, though, as speedy forward Shaye Wolfe got behind the defense and scored in the 14th minute, and would answer again after the Muskies' first goal.
Lakeland got on the board at 16:12 of the match, just over two minutes after Alverno's opening goal, as
Meagan Simmons (
Sr.-Troy, Ill.) received a pass from Gastrau and scored from straight on 20 yards out for her first goal of the season and her first goal since her freshman year in 2016. The Inferno retook the lead just before halftime, though, as Jeff Flores headed in a corner kick by Wolfe in the 42nd minute to make it 2-1.
The Muskies scored the equalizer in the 54th minute.
Tracey Sery (
So.-Big Bend, Wis.) passed ahead from near midfield to
Rachel Hasko (
Sr.-Racine, Wis.), who fired a laser from 40 yards out that found the net for her team-best sixth goal of the season.
Erin Tomlinson (
So.-Madison, Wis.) made five saves in goal for Lakeland, while Alverno's Kenzie Bermudez stopped 17 shots as both goalkeepers battled wet conditions causing the ball to skid plenty on the artificial surface.
Lakeland is on the road next time out Wednesday when it travels to face Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
