Lakeland University and the University of Wisconsin-Superior proved to have very even women's soccer squads for the second year in a row when the teams played to a scoreless tie Saturday morning at Taylor Field.
The Muskies and Yellowjackets played 110 minutes without either team able to break through for the second straight season, having also played to a scoreless tie in double overtime last year. This time it came in a breakfast hour match that served as Lakeland's home opener.
Both teams had opportunities in a match where the Muskies held a slim 20-19 advantage in shot attempts and a slightly larger 10-6 margin in shots on goal.
The Muskies (1-1-1 overall) in particular had ample opportunities in the game's early minutes, late in regulation and then again in the second overtime, where the teams countered back and forth frequently in the last 10-minute period.
Hope Cerney (
Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) finished with nine shot attempts alone, frequently making runs on the left side late in regulation and in overtime.
UW-Superior (0-2-1 overall) had several quality chances as well. The guests had the nearest miss in the 41st minute when Tatum Lardinois lifted a looping shot high and over Muskies goalkeeper
Emely Ortega (
So.-South Beloit, Ill.), but the ball hit the crossbar and bounced away. The Yellowjackets also tested Ortega with four shots on goal in the second half, including the 65th minute when Annah Schussman was on the doorstep but the Lakeland keeper cut off her angle and turned her shot away.
Ortega made six saves in her first collegiate start, playing well in goal.
Jenna Borts (
Jr.-Oak Creek, Wis.),
Rachel Hasko (
Sr.-Racine, Wis.) and
Allison Morgan (
Fr.-Fredericksburg, Va.) all also attempted three shots, with Hasko and Borts keying the midfield and Morgan playing often on the wing.
Madison Gutekunst made 10 saves in goal for UW-Superior. Emma Street led the Yellowjackets with five shot attempts, and nine different players accounted for the team's 19 shots.
Lakeland is back on the field tomorrow when it travels to face St. Norbert College at noon in De Pere.
