DE PERE –
Emely Ortega (
So.-South Beloit, Ill.) made 13 saves and the Lakeland University women's soccer team used a good defensive effort all-around to stay with a good St. Norbert College team in a 1-0 loss Sunday afternoon.
The Muskies were on the defensive most of the day but kept the Green Knights off the board until late. Not until Grace Krause's goal at the 72:38 mark did St. Norbert finally break through with what would prove to be the deciding goal.
Lakeland was outshot by a 28-2 margin, but Ortega was strong in goal for the second straight day. Just over 24 hours after she turned away six shots without allowing a goal in 110 minutes in a scoreless tie with UW-Superior, she made 13 saves on Sunday.
The Muskies (1-2-1 overall) also played with a thin roster after injuries and illness have taken a toll early in the season, but still held St. Norbert (2-3 overall) scoreless until Krause lofted a shot high and over the head of Ortega and into the corner of the net with 17:22 left in the second half. Lakeland got two shots on goal from
Rachel Hasko (
Sr.-Racine, Wis.) but did not generate a shot the rest of the way as the hosts held on for the win.
The Muskies return to the pitch Saturday when they travel to face Finlandia (Mich.) University for a 9 a.m. kickoff in Hancock, Mich.
