RIVER FOREST, Ill. – A trio of three-set wins in singles play helped lift the Lakeland University women's tennis team to a victory over Dominican University Saturday in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.
The Muskies defeated the Stars 7-2 for their second NACC dual win of the season. Lakeland also evened its mark for the day, finishing 1-1 on its trip to the Chicago area after a 7-2 loss to Concordia University Chicago earlier in the day.
The Muskies (2-2 overall, 2-1 NACC) won close matches at No. 4, 5 and 6 flights against Dominican (0-4 overall, 0-2 NACC).
Annie Adams (
Fr.-Marinette, Wis.),
Jessica Leicht (
So.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) and
Morgan Erbstoesser (
Fr.-Union, Ill.) all posted close wins, including Adams and Erbstoesser both rebounding from first set losses to come back to win.
Adams fell behind Maya Banks at No. 4 singles before rallying for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win. Erbstoesser was down a set at No. 6 to Evelin Silva before coming back for a 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 7-5, while Leicht won a first set tiebreak against Gladys Bautista at No. 5 and eventually pulled out a 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-1 victory.
Leicht also was a double-winner against the Stars, as she paired with
Kallie Hoeft (
So.-Cascade, Wis.) at No. 3 doubles for an 8-1 win over Bautista and Silva.
Ellie Roe (
Jr.-Plymouth, Wis.) and
Abby Juozapaitis (
Jr.-North Prairie, Wis.) also were winners in singles against Dominican, with Roe defeating Juliana Neiza 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Juozapaitis handled Alexis Hoskins for a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
Roe and Juozapaitis also two-time singles winners Saturday as they registered Lakeland's only two wins against Concordia Chicago. Roe blanked Callie Strayer 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Juozapaitis came back for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 victory over Taylor Jensen at No. 3 singles.
The Muskies play their first home dual of the season Tuesday when they host Knox (Ill.) College at 4 p.m. at Sports Core in Kohler.
