Muskies get lift from bench but fall to Raiders 90-79

Brandon Rowe (Fr.-Rio, Wis.) scored a career-high 18 points and led a spark from the bench for Lakeland University in an eventual 90-79 loss to Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies erased a 16-point first half deficit but could never quite cool down the hot-shooting Raiders, who wrapped up a sweep of the season series between Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference rivals. MSOE also defeated Lakeland for the 10th straight time and sent the Muskies to their fifth straight loss in January.

Rowe scored 11 of his 18 points in the first half, including three three-pointers as the Muskies (6-9 overall, 4-6 NACC) went on a big run to quickly erase the Raiders' margin. MSOE took a 30-14 lead with 8 minutes, 52 seconds left in the first half, but Lakeland outscored the Raiders 28-11 over a span of 6:02. Rowe, Sam Kaminski (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) and Zach Hasenstein (Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) all hit three-pointers in the run that concluded with Hasenstein's second straight three giving the Muskies their first lead of the game at 42-41 late in the half.

Tylan Huff (Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and Eric Jordan (Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) also hit three-pointers off the bench as the Muskies made eight triples in all in the first half, but MSOE (8-7 overall, 5-5 NACC) bounced back from Lakeland's run with six straight points before halftime to go ahead 47-42 at the break.

The Raiders also scored the first four points to start the second half, and they would lead the rest of the way. Lakeland closed back within two early in the half and the teams traded baskets for a four-minute stretch, and the Muskies even got within 61-60 when Jequan Pegeese (Jr.-Beloit, Wis.) split two free throws with 12:07 to play.

MSOE would follow with a 10-0 run, though, capped by two free throws by Matthew Kirmse making it 71-60 with 7:30 left. Lakeland would get no closer than five the rest of the way.

The Raiders shot 56.1% for the game, making 37 of 66 shots. MSOE hit 21 of 37 field goals in the first half (56.8%) and barely cooled in the second half, making 16 of 29 (55.2%). The guests also outrebounded Lakeland 40-27 and had four starters score in double figures led by Gabe Wear with 18 points.

The Muskies stayed close thanks to 40 points from the bench, led by Rowe hitting 7 of 11 shots including 4 of 6 from three-point range. Huff also added 16 points and both Hasenstein and Isaac Anderson (Sr.-Linden, Wis.) scored 13 points each.

Lakeland kept up with MSOE's shooting pace much of the game and was over 50% in the second half before finishing at 47.6% (30 of 63). The Muskies made 13 of 32 from three-point range (40.6%).

MSOE finished the season sweep after defeating Lakeland 95-70 two weeks earlier in Milwaukee. The Raiders' 10-game winning streak in the series also dates back to 2015.

Lakeland is back on the road Tuesday when it travels to face Concordia University Wisconsin at 7 p.m. in Mequon.
