MEQUON – The Lakeland University men's basketball team broke a five-game losing streak with a scorching-hot shooting performance, hitting 58.7% from the field in defeating Concordia University Wisconsin 109-87 Tuesday night.
The Muskies won for the first time this year and picked up an important Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference road win. Lakeland also toppled its longtime rival and improved to 7-9 overall and 5-6 in conference play while dealing Concordia just its third conference loss.
The Muskies made 44 of 75 shots in the game, including 15 of 30 from three-point range (50.0%). Five players scored in double figures and four more scored at least seven points.
Lakeland shot 63.9% (23 of 36) in a first half where both teams torched the nets. Concordia (9-6 overall, 8-3 NACC) also shot 64.7% (22 of 34), but the Muskies took a 63-53 lead at halftime after making 11 of 17 three-point tries.
Lakeland never trailed in the second half, pulling away after the Falcons briefly closed to within 69-66 with 16 minutes, 13 seconds left in the game. A 10-0 run late was capped by a steal and layup by
Greg Barber (
Jr.-Miami, Fla.) to give the Muskies a 96-78 lead with 5:35 left, and Lakeland hit the 100-point mark with 4:34 left in the game on a layup by
Jequan Pegeese (
Jr.-Beloit, Wis.).
Carlos Campos (
Sr.-Janesville, Wis.) scored 20 points to lead Lakeland,
Tony White (
Fr.-New Orleans, La.) scored 18 and Barber added a career-high 15.
Trenton Nickel (
Jr.-Kiel, Wis.) also scored 12 points and
Isaac Anderson (
Sr.-Linden, Wis.) notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Lakeland topped 100 points for the first time this season and produced its largest scoring output since a 109-90 win over Concordia Chicago on Feb. 3, 2018.
Jared Jurss scored a game-high 21 points and added 12 assists for Concordia, which finished the game shooting 52.1% (37 of 71).
Lakeland is back home Saturday when it welcomes Marian University or a 2 p.m. tip-off at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
