Lakeland pulls away late to top MSOE for fourth straight NACC win

MILWAUKEE – Rachel Hasko (Sr.-Racine, Wis.) scored seven points in the fourth quarter and keyed a finishing kick by the Lakeland University women's basketball team as it finished strong to defeat Milwaukee School of Engineering 57-41 Saturday in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.

The Muskies outscored the Raiders 17-7 in the fourth quarter and opened 2020 with their fourth straight victory in conference. Lakeland improved to 4-7 overall and is now 4-2 in the NACC, while MSOE lost for just the second time in conference play and is also now 4-7 overall and 4-2 in league.

Hasko hit a three-pointer with 9 minutes, 19 seconds left in the game to give the Muskies a 43-36 lead after the host Raiders had just closed within four points. The triple started a 17-2 run by Lakeland over the next minutes to pull away at the end in a game that went back and forth for three quarters.

The teams swapped the lead seven times and were tied on four other occasions, and neither team led by more than six points until the fourth period. The game was tied as late as 28-28 midway through the third quarter, and MSOE trailed by just a point late in the third before Kacey Gardner (So.-Evergreen Park, Ill.) made a three and Amanda Majewski (Sr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) scored on a layup to give the Muskies a 40-34 lead entering the fourth.

MSOE led by as many as six points in the early going before Lakeland finished the first quarter on an 11-0 run for a 17-12 lead. The Muskies held a slim 24-22 lead at halftime.

Lakeland won by holding the Raiders to 26.8% shooting, as MSOE made 15 of 56 from the field. The Muskies shot 32.7% (18 of 55) and also were outrebounded 44-35, but committed just three turnovers in their first game since a Dec. 20 loss at UW-Platteville.

Hasko tied her career high and led Lakeland in scoring with 11 points, making 3 of 6 from the field and 2 of 4 from long range plus 3 of 4 from the free throw line. Morgan Zenon (Fr.-Twin Lakes, Wis.) added nine points plus eight rebounds off the bench, including five offensive rebounds. Hayley Walding (So.-Bradenton, Fla.) also added seven points plus a team-high three assists off the bench and Megan Will (Jr.-Lake Mils, Wis.) scored seven and added nine rebounds.

Britta Grayvold led MSOE with 11 points while Danielle Valley pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
