Nate Vanderwaal (
Sr.-Rockford, Ill.) one-upped his career high for kills in a match and tied a Lakeland University men's volleyball record in doing so as the Muskies swept Adrian (Mich.) College in three sets Saturday morning at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
Vanderwaal finished with 23 kills, one better than his career high set a week earlier and good enough to tie Lakeland's single-match varsity record for kills in a match, originally set by
Matt Stolz against Cardinal Stritch University Feb. 8, 2017. He also set the record for most kills in a three-set match as the Muskies picked up their third win of the season with the non-conference victory.
Lakeland (3-8 overall) hit .330 for the match with 47 kills and 18 errors in 88 swings. Vanderwaal posted an outstanding .543 hitting percentage with his 23 kills coming with four kills in 35 attacks, and he single-handedly outhit Adrian, which finished with 18 kills and 18 errors for a .000 hitting percentage.
Ben Miller (
Jr.-Middleton, Wis.) also had a career day hitting, posting a career-high 12 kills while hitting at a .409 rate. As a team, the Muskies hit at least .294 in all three sets, carrying them through in a competitive match that included 25 total ties and 11 lead changes over three sets.
Cameron Ekum (
Jr.-Wales, Wis.) finished with 38 assists plus seven digs and
Maui Viola (
Jr.-Gurnee, Ill.) led the defense with 10 digs. Five different players registered at least one-half block as well as Lakeland finished with six team blocks.
Noah Marcinkowski finished with eight kills to lead Adrian (7-7 overall), but the Muskies held the Bulldogs' leading hitter in check less than a day after Marcinkowski finished with a career-best 31 kills in a five-set loss at Marian University last night. Tedrick Gula also added seven kills for Adrian.
The Muskies are home again for another morning contest next time out when they host Loras (Iowa) College for a non-conference match next Saturday at 10 a.m.
