Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Loras outlasts Lakeland in five-set morning marathon match

Loras College saved two match points and pulled out an extra-long fifth set to spoil a good effort by the Lakeland University men's volleyball team Saturday morning at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Duhawks rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the match and then rallied in the fifth set, prevailing 23-25, 25-13, 22-25, 25-14, 18-16. Lakeland lost in its first five-set match of the season and dropped to 3-9 overall this year.

The Muskies played well in coming back from early deficits and then finishing strong in both the first and third sets. Lakeland also led 6-2 early in the deciding fifth set before Loras (6-2 overall) came back and set up and tense finish.

The Duhawks went on an 8-3 run, including four straight points giving them a 10-9 lead in the fifth before a serving error tied the score again. From there the teams were tied six more times, neither going ahead by more than a point.

The Muskies held match points at 14-13 and again at 16-15, while Loras led 15-14 before a kill by Ben Miller (Jr.-Middleton, Wis.) and then a Duhawk attack error. A service error tied the score at 16-16, though, and Loras took the lead on a kill by Jake Filotto and then scored the deciding point on a Lakeland attack error.

Nate Vanderwaal (Sr.-Rockford, Ill.) finished with 17 kills and Miller added 10 kills for Lakeland, which hit at a .118 attack percentage with 41 kills and 26 errors. Matt Misheck (Jr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) also added eight kills, and he and Vanderwaal also posted seven digs each.

Maui Viola (Jr.-Gurnee, Ill.) finished with nine digs to lead the back row defense. Cameron Ekum (Jr.-Wales, Wis.) posted 34 assists and Jesse Peters (Fr.-Lake Mary, Fla.) added two service aces.

Dorian Fiorenza led Loras with 22 kills and added 11 digs. Filotto also added 10 kills and 10 digs and Ian Walsh also posted 10 kills. The Duhawks hit .264 for the match with 58 kills and 24 errors and also finished with 10 team blocks.

Loras defeated Lakeland for the second time in nine meetings. The Muskies and Duhawks were members together in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League from 2015-17 before Lakeland moved to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference for volleyball last year and Loras joined the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin this year.

The Muskies head on the road next as they travel to take on North Central (Ill.) College Tuesday night in Naperville, Ill., at 7 p.m.
