The Lakeland University women's basketball team was unable to slow down a red-hot opponent as Benedictine University clinched the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference regular season title with a 70-48 win Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles won their 14th straight game overall and improved to 18-0 in NACC play, clinching the top seed in the upcoming NACC Tournament. Lakeland lost on Senior Day and in its final home game of the season, falling to 10-14 overall and 10-9 in conference play.
Benedictine (21-2 overall) was efficient offensively in the halfcourt or in transition and shot 45.0% from the field (27 of 60). The Muskies on the other hand had a tough day on offense and made just 27.4% of their shots (17 of 62).
Lakeland led just once in the game, after it scored seven straight points to take a 7-6 lead midway through the first quarter. The Eagles took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Muskies 20-10 to take a 34-20 halftime lead, and the lead would never fall lower than that the rest of the way.
Benedictine stars Allison Michalski and Alex Fanning both made a big impact, including Michalski scoring 22 points while playing just 18 minutes due to foul trouble. Fanning also added 10 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots and regularly was tough to score over inside.
Megan Will (
Jr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) scored 10 points and added nine rebounds and
Ellie Felsinger (
Fr.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) provided a bright spot off the bench with nine points plus eight rebounds.
Rachel Hasko (
Sr.-Racine, Wis.) also added six points,
Kacey Gardner (
So.-Evergreen Park, Ill.) added four rebounds and three steals and
Riley Phelps (
Sr.-White Pigeon, Mich.) added three rebounds.
Hasko and Phelps were part of a quintet of seniors who all got the start in their final home game including
Kylie Birkholz (
Kenosha, Wis.),
Hannah Kanyuh (
Rapid River, Mich.) and
Amanda Majewski (
Sr.-Peshtigo, Wis.).
Lakeland remains alive in the chase for the sixth spot in the NACC Tournament, as the Muskies are one-half game behind Aurora for sixth. The Spartans are 10-8 in league and have two games left, while Lakeland closes out the regular season Wednesday when it travels to face Illinois Institute of Technology for a 7 p.m. tip.
