Nationally ranked Benedictine University came through at the end of two close first sets and finished off the Lakeland University men's volleyball team in three sets Friday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Eagles swept the Muskies 25-21, 25-23, 25-15 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match. Lakeland dropped to 4-13 overall and is 0-3 in conference after falling to a Benedictine team ranked 13th in the latest AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 15 poll.
The Muskies had their best chance in the second set, when they led by four points early and still were up by two at 22-20, needing just three points to win the set. The Eagles (9-5 overall, 1-0 NACC) would score four straight points, to get to set point, though, and closed it out two points later to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Benedictine hit .259 as a team (37 kills, 15 errors) and displayed its firepower with nine different players accounting for at least one kill. The Eagles saved their best hitting for the third set, when they attacked at a .500 rate with 13 kills and just one error in 24 swings.
Lakeland hit .188 as a team with 37 kills and 18 errors.
Nate Vanderwaal (
Sr.-Rockford, Ill.) registered nearly half of the team's kills with 18, and
Ben Miller (
Jr.-Middleton, Wis.) added nine kills.
Cameron Ekum (
Jr.-Wales, Wis.) also finished with 31 assists and added five kills from his setter spot.
The Muskies are on the road next when they face St. Norbert College in a conference match Tuesday at 7 p.m. in De Pere.
