Janai' Farr (
Jr.-Racine, Wis.) drilled a career-high seven three-pointers, part of the hottest shooting night of the season for the Lakeland University women's basketball team as it defeated Milwaukee School of Engineering 76-60 Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies shot a season-best 50.9% from the field, making 29 of 57 field goals to snap a brief two-game losing streak. Lakeland completed a sweep of both games against MSOE this season and improved to 9-12 overall and 9-7 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
Farr scored a career-high 23 points, the most points by a Lakeland player this season, hitting 8 of 13 from the field including 7 of 9 from three-point range. She also hit the most three-pointers in a game for a Muskie since Peggy Keiper made eight triples Dec. 5, 2007 against MSOE.
The Muskies made 10 of 21 triples in all, shooting 47.6% from long range. Lakeland pulled away with a big second quarter and led by as many as 27 points in the third quarter before rebuffing a late comeback attempt by the Raidesr (6-14 overall, 6-9 NACC).
The teams were tied 10-10 late in the first quarter when the Muskies finished the period on an 8-1 run for an 18-11 lead. Lakeland continued to roll in the second quarter, in all pushing its run to 31-8 to end the half and leading 41-18 at halftime.
The Muskies built their biggest lead late in the third quarter when
Amanda Majewski (
Sr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) drained a three to make it 62-35, but the Raiders did not quit and crawled back into the game. MSOE used a 16-2 run capped by a layup by Danielle Valley making it 64-51 with 6 minutes, 33 seconds left in the game, but Majewski and Farr hit threes and
Megan Will (
Jr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) also scored inside twice as part of a 10-2 spurt to go back ahead 74-53 with just over three minutes to play.
Will finished with a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds plus four blocked shots and Majewski also added 10 points.
Hayley Walding (
So.-Bradenton, Fla.) also added nine points off the bench.
Amy Reiser scored 21 points and added 12 rebounds for MSOE, which shot 42.9% for the game (24 of 56), including 54.5% in the second half when it made 18 of 33 shots. Danielle Valley also added 13 points and seven assists, and the Raiders finished with a 36-28 rebounding advantage and assisted on 23 of their 24 made field goals.
Lakeland is home again Saturday when it welcomes rival Concordia University Wisconsin for a 4:15 p.m. start at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
