Series history: 130th meeting, Concordia leads 66-63
The Muskies and Falcons have a long-running series that dates to 1938-39, when Lakeland was known as Mission House College and the Concordia campus was located in downtown Milwaukee. The Muskies won the first meeting this season with a red-hot shooting performance in a 109-87 victory in the first matchup in Mequon Jan. 21. Concordia swept the season series last year, eking out a one-point 65-64 win on Jan. 15, 2019 here at Lakeland before winning at home 83-66 on Feb. 2. The Falcons have held the upper hand of late, winning nine of the last twelve meetings.
Lakeland last time out: Defeated Concordia Chicago 92-76 Tuesday
The Muskies broke open a close game in the final eight minutes to win for the fourth time in five games and complete a sweep of the Cougars this season. The contest featured 25 ties and eight lead changes, but with the score tied at 65-65 with less than eight minutes to play, the Muskies scored the next eight points.
Zach Hasenstein made two free throws and then a three-pointer, and
Jequan Pegeese also made a three for a 73-65 lead with 6:25 left. Hasenstein scored 22 points, including 15 in the second half, and added eight rebounds.
Eric Jordan also scored 15 points off the bench, and
Carlos Campos added 13 points.
Concordia Wisconsin last time out: Defeated MSOE 85-71 Tuesday
The Falcons trailed in the early going but outscored the Raiders 34-13 over a long stretch in the first half to take a 13-point lead, and they'd never trail again in winning the first of two meetings with MSOE this season. Concordia shot 55.6% from the field, including 8 of 18 from three-point range, and
Jordan Johnson led all scorers with 23 points. Camden Flowers also scored 15 points off the bench and Sheboygan native and Sheboygan Lutheran High School graduate Jared Jurss dished out nine assists.
About the Falcons: Concordia is just behind co-leaders Benedictine and Wisconsin Lutheran in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and is one of three teams to already qualify for the conference tournament. The Falcons have made the conference tourney every year since the 2008-09 season and CUW tied for last year's regular season title with MSOE but was upset in the tourney semifinals by eventual champion Aurora. Concordia has one of the best offenses in the conference, shooting 48.1% from the field, second-best in the conference.
Recapping the first meeting: The Muskies and Falcons met just over two weeks ago in a high-scoring affair where Lakeland scored a season-high 109 points. The teams combined to score 116 points in a wild first half, when both clubs shot better than 63%. The Muskies stayed hot throughout, shooting 58.7% for the game and drilling 15 of their 30 three-point tries. Five players scored in double figures for Lakeland, including
Carlos Campos, who led the Muskies with 20 points, and
Greg Barber, who scored a career-high 15 points.
Isaac Anderson notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Jurss led Concordia with 21 points and also added a career-high 12 assists.
