Edgewood capitalizes on early opportunities to top Lakeland women’s soccer

VERONA, Wis. – The Lakeland University women's soccer team had a number of chances but was unable to cash in during a 3-0 loss to Edgewood College Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game.

The Muskies played the Eagles on even terms in field play, including holding a slim advantage in shots on goal, but Edgewood converted more opportunities in dropping Lakeland to 1-12 overall and 1-8 in conference.

The Eagles (4-9-1 overall, 4-5 NACC) scored twice in the first half, including the first goal just over seven minutes in. Cassidy Kloos scored her first goal of the season with an assist from Siobhan Gallagher to put the Muskies in a 1-0 hole early.

Edgewood added a second goal late in the first half when Gallagher scored unassisted in the 35th minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. The Eagles also scored again near the midpoint of the second half when Sydney Feldner picked up her first goal of the season at 66 minutes, 51 seconds of the match for a 3-0 lead.

The Muskies would not go quietly, getting off eight of their 16 shots in the final 23 minutes. Marlen Reyes (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.), Virginia Perez (Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.), Hanna Brouch (Fr.-Kaukauna, Wis.) and Alani Chairez (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) all put shots on goal, but Lakeland was unable to break through as Edgewood goalkeeper Mackenzie Jones stopped seven shots in the second half.

Edgewood finished with a 16-15 edge in shot attempts but Lakeland posted a 9-8 lead in shots on goal. Haley Rich (Jr.-West Chicago, Ill.) made four saves for the Muskies while Hailey Corcoran earned the win for the Eagles with two saves in the first half before Jones came on in the second half.

Lakeland takes to the road again Saturday when it will face Alverno College at 1 p.m. in Milwaukee.
