Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Perez scores twice, Lakeland bests Alverno for second win of season

MILWAUKEE – Virginia Perez (Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) scored two goals and added an assist and Skylar Garza (Sr.-Hartford, Wis.) broke the ice with the opening goal in the 32nd minute as the Lakeland University women's soccer team rolled from there in a 4-0 victory over Alverno College Saturday afternoon.

The Muskies scored twice in both halves for a season high for goals and also posted their second shutout of the season. Lakeland won for the second time this season and second time in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play, improving to 2-12 overall and 2-8 in the NACC.

The Muskies dominated play in the field against Alverno (2-6 overall, 0-10 NACC), outshooting the hosts 30-7 for the game. It took time for Lakeland to cash in though, as the match was scoreless until 31 minutes, 49 seconds when Garza ran onto a pass from Alani Chairez (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and looped it over goalkeeper Kenzie Bermudez for her first goal of the season.

Lakeland would score again less than four minutes later as pressure on the Inferno began to pay off. Perez's first shot was deflected away by Bermudez, but Marlen Reyes (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) was in position to deposit the rebound into an open net for a 2-0 lead.

The second half scoring would feature a pair of goals by Perez courtesy of passes from teammate Faith Turley (So.-Lincoln, Ill.). The first came in the 66th minute when Turley struck a free kick that Perez reached in the box and then chipped a shot over Bermudez and just under the crossbar to make it 3-0. The second came at 73:22 of the match when Turley hit a corner kick that got through to Perez by the right post, and she headed it in for her second goal of the match.

Haley Rich (Jr.-West Chicago, Ill.) finished with the shutout in goal for Lakeland, stopping three Alverno shots. Perez and Hanna Brouch (Fr.-Kaukauna, Wis.) led the Muskies with six shot attempts each and Reyes and Turley both added five shots. Nine different players recorded at least one shot attempt for Lakeland.

Bermudez made 12 saves in goal for Alverno while Shaye Wolfe led the team with three shot attempts.

The Muskies next will travel to Fond du Lac to face Marian University Wednesday at 7 p.m.
