Series history:Â 20th meeting, Lakeland leads 19-0
The series between Lakeland and Alverno has been all Muskies, and only once have they as much as dropped a set to the Inferno, that coming in 2014 in a 3-1 win on the road in Milwaukee. The teams did not meet this spring as Alverno sat out 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lakeland swept the most recent meeting Sept. 24, 2019 with a 25-22, 25-17, 25-15 win as Shannon Bishop piled up 14 kills and
Sydney Pingitore totaled 13 digs.
Lakeland last time out: Lost at Benedictine 3-1 Saturday
The Muskies were defeated by the Eagles 21-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-19 in Lisle, Ill., losing their fourth straight match and their third straight in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play. Lakeland continued its string of getting off to good starts, winning the first set for the fifth straight match but once again couldn't turn it into a win as Benedictine hit .273 for the match.
Susana Stevens finished with 13 kills,
Brelynn Scoles added 12 kills,
Emily Duchow totaled 26 assists and
Sydney Pingitore finished with 22 digs. The Muskies lost for the third time in five days and the second straight day after also falling at home to St. Norbert in five sets Friday night when the Green Knights rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win the final three sets.
Alverno last time out: Lost at Rockford 3-1; lost to Mount Mary 3-0 Saturday
The Inferno competed in a triangular in Rockford, Ill., on Saturday against the host Regents and Milwaukee rival Mount Mary, falling to Rockford 25-15, 25-21, 21-25, 25-12 and to the Blue Angels 25-16, 25-19, 26-24. Rolin West paced Alverno in kills in both matches with 14 against Rockford and 11 versus Mount Mary. Selena Upshur also posted 10 kills and Alex McMath totaled 25 assists and 18 digs against Rockford and Jenna Flayter added eight kills and four solo blocks against Mount Mary.
About the Inferno: Alverno won its season-opening match against Mount Mary but since has lost 12 straight matches. The Inferno also had a brief pause for a time, with a pair of their NACC matches in early October not played and going down as no contests. Alverno has played with a thin roster all season with just nine players on the team, and it played with six in both of its matches at Rockford last weekend.
Depth revealed among youth, injuries: The Muskies' tough season that has included a bruising early schedule plus a number of injuries has taken a toll on the team's won/loss record, but if nothing else the team has found it has a number of players capable of carrying a big load on the attack. Seven different players have posted at least 11 kills in a match, with
Hailey DeGrave,
S'Niya Gantt,
Katie Metzler,
Brelynn Scoles,
Susana Stevens,
Kelly Swope and
Isabella Westerholm all accomplishing the feat.
