Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Early lead fades as Muskies fall to Eagles in NACC play

LISLE, Ill. – Michecadet Gethand (So.-Jackson, Wis.) scored for the second straight match but Benedictine scored four first half goals, three late in the half to defeat the Lakeland University men's soccer team 5-1 Saturday evening.

A competitive game for nearly 40 minutes turned late in the first half as the Eagles scored three goals in a span of 4 minutes, 29 seconds to take a 4-1 lead going into halftime. Lakeland was unable to recover and dropped to 2-6-1 overall and 1-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

The Muskies held a brief lead in the first half after Gethand scored his third goal of the season, with Alessandro Bianchi (Jr.-Venice, Italy) and Gavin Pinchart (Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) both assisting at 13:19 of the match to open the scoring. The lead lasted less than two minutes, though, with David Szaflarski scoring unassisted at 15:05 to tie the match at 1-1.

Benedictine (7-2-2 overall, 4-1-1 NACC) would take control of the match starting in the 40th minute, when Michal Szaflarski scored heading in a corner kick by Fernando Alvarez. The Eagles would scored again less than a minute later on another header from Armando Gallegos of a cross into the box, and the hosts would add another goal with just 50 seconds left in the first half when Manav Soorma headed in a free kick by Tony Mavrogiannis.

The scoring slowed in the second half, but Benedictine scored again when Alex Pillath found the back of the net in the 63rd minute to extend the lead to 5-1. The Muskies were on the defensive much of the second half and did not register a shot in the final 45 minutes.

The Eagles outshot Lakeland 26-4 for the match, including 22-1 after the Muskies scored the opening goal. Zach Heiman (So.-Racine, Wis.) made eight saves in goal and Lee Kellom (Fr.-Michigan City, Ind.) added one save in relief after coming on for the final six minutes. Michael Barragan (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) totaled two shots for Lakeland and Sebastian Ramirez (So.-Hinsdale, Ill.) also added one shot.

The Muskies continue a road-heavy portion of their schedule with a trip to Wisconsin Lutheran College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee before beginning a four-game homestand starting next Saturday against Rockford University.
