LISLE, Ill. –
Hope Cerney (
Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) scored her second goal of the season but Benedictine University scored three second half goals to top the Lakeland University women's soccer team 4-1 Saturday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
Cerney buried a penalty kick into the net for the second time this season, briefly bringing the Muskies within 3-1 in the 79th minute. Lakeland would get no closer, though, and dropped to 1-9 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
The Muskies played their second straight match affected by weather, as the game was delayed at halftime for nearly two hours due to lightning in the Chicago area. Benedictine (2-10 overall, 2-4 NACC) held a 1-0 lead after 45 minutes after an unassisted goal by Victoria Alvarado midway through the first half.
It remained a one-goal game until the 63rd minute, when Alvarado set up Stephanie Hernandez for a goal and a 2-0 Eagles lead. Benedictine would score again at 72:57 of the match with Alvarado involved again with an assist on a goal by Shelby Mapham.
Lakeland would get on the board with Cerney's penalty kick, but the Eagles received an insurance goal with just over eight minutes left in the match thanks to an own goal, as an attempted header to clear a corner kick instead went into the Muskies' goal.
Benedictine controlled possession most of the way and finished with a 22-3 advantage in shot attempts.
Haley Rich (
Jr.-West Chicago, Ill.) made 13 saves in goal, while Benedictine's Katherine Prochnow made two saves.
Lakeland is back home again Wednesday when it hosts Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field.
