Series history:Â 16th meeting, Lakeland leads 14-1
The Muskies have dominated the series with the Regents, winning 14 of the first 15 meetings including the last two. The most recent one came at Taylor Field Sept. 28, 2019, with Lakeland prevailing 4-0 as
Skylar Garza,
Amanda Buckler, Rachel Hasko and Elizabeth Siebert all scored goals and Jenna Borts added two assists. The Muskies won the first 12 meetings before Rockford broke through with its first-ever win over Lakeland, a 1-0 victory in Illinois on Oct. 8, 2017 where Erin DiSanti scored the match's lone goal on a penalty kick and Drew Garcia made 10 saves for a hard-earned shutout. The two teams have met yearly since their first matchup in 2003 with three exceptions, not meeting in 2004, 2014 and last season in the COVID-19 pandemic affected short spring season.
Lakeland last time out: Lost to Wisconsin Lutheran 8-0 Wednesday
The Muskies suffered one of their worst losses of the season, as the Warriors scored four times in each half. Miriam Carreno scored four goals for WLC, including a hat trick in the first half. Little went right for Lakeland, which allowed a pair of goals off rebounds and a third goal from near midfield that took a big bounce over the goalkeeper's head and into the net.
Hanna Brouch had the Muskies' lone shot on goal, a golden chance early in the first half that required a diving save by Lutheran keeper Sierra Kannas, and
Haley Rich and
Erin Tomlinson combined to make nine saves in goal and defender
Gwynn Manteufel added a team save sweeping a ball off the goal line.
Rockford last time out: Lost at Concordia Chicago 2-1 Wednesday
The Regents held a halftime lead over the Cougars on the road in River Forest before Concordia fought back with a pair of goals in the second half, including the eventual game-winner in the 63rd minute. Rianna Tovar scored the first goal of the match for Rockford in the 34th minute with an assist from twin sister Bianca Tovar. CUC would apply heavy pressure in the second half, though, outshooting the Regents 14-1 in the final 45 minutes and 26-8 for the match. Morgan Dolphin made 10 saves in goal for Rockford.
About the Regents: Rockford enters with a 2-8 record but has wins over Eureka (3-2 in overtime) and Alverno (8-0) and has been competitive in most of its losses, including falling 3-0 to NACC power Dominican. The Regents did not take part in the NACC's spring season earlier this year, and in their most recent full campaign finished 0-18-1 in 2019 and entered this season on a 17-match losing streak. Shelby Spaulding is in her first year as head coach at Rockford. A graduate of NCAA Division III Howard Payne (Texas), she joined the Regents after serving as an assistant at Allegheny (Pa.) the past two years.
