Box Score 3 PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University women's volleyball team defeated Rockford University in a conference match to start the day on the way to splitting two matches at its home triangular Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies swept the Regents 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 for their second Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season and third overall victory of the campaign. Lakeland was unable to complete a sweep of its day, though, falling to Carroll University 16-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-16 to cap the afternoon inside a steamy Woltzen Gymnasium.
An apparent air-conditioning malfunction inside the gym resulted in frequent breaks to wipe swept off the floor throughout the day. The Muskies handled the conditions and Rockford in the opener, though, coming back late to the win the first set and then never trailing in the final two sets.
Lakeland trailed in the opening set much of the way and was down 18-14 before heating up late.
Sydney Pingitore (
Sr.-Kenosha, Wis.) posted a pair of aces and
Brelynn Scoles (
So.-Kewaskum, Wis.) and
Kelly Swope (
So.-Heyworth, Ill.) combined for five kills in a 10-3 run on the way to winning the set.
The Muskies then jumped to a 7-1 lead in the second set and withstood several Rockford (2-17 overall, 0-7 NACC) runs to close it out for a 2-0 lead in the match. Lakeland also got off to a fast start in the third set with
Kimmy McKay (
Sr.-Bolingbrook, Ill.) serving to a 6-0 lead including an ace plus four kills by
Susana Stevens (
Las Cruces, N.M.). The Muskies stayed ahead the rest of the way, finishing the match with a kill by freshman
Faith Spannbauer (
Greenfield, Wis.).
Stevens finished with 11 kills and Swope added ten kills without an error in 16 attacks for a .625 hitting percentage.
Emily Duchow (
Jr.-Potter, Wis.) finished with 18 assists and Pingitore also added 14 digs plus six of Lakeland's 11 service aces.
The Muskies as a team were just getting started on serve in the opener, as they piled up 16 aces in the second match against Carroll, the most aces by a Lakeland team since delivering 17 aces against Rockford Oct. 17, 2015. The Muskies also got off to a good start against the Pioneers, never trailing in winning the first set in convincing fashion.
Carroll (6-14 overall) appeared to be a cinch to even the match when it held a 22-17 lead late in the second set, but Lakeland battled back to earn a set point at 24-23 after two kills each by
Hailey DeGrave (
So.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) and
Emily Bringer (
Sr.-Round Lake, Ill.). The Pioneers came back to score the final three points to win the set, though, and the Muskies would play from behind much of the final two sets. Carroll slowly pulled away to win the third and then used a 7-1 run in the fourth set to break a tie and take an 18-12 lead on the way to closing out the match.
DeGrave finished with a career-high 13 kills against Carroll and Pingitore recorded 27 digs plus four aces. Duchow also added 15 assists and 11 digs and
Roseily Carrasquillo (
Fr.-Yabucoa, Puerto Rico) finished with 12 assists plus four more aces.
Cathleen Flannery finished with team highs of 12 kills and 16 digs for Carroll, which finished 2-0 on the day after also defeating Rockford 25-7, 25-16, 25-14 in the second match of the afternoon.
