Matt Misheck (
Jr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) hammered home 12 kills to lead an efficient attack and Lakeland University swept Edgewood College in three sets Tuesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies prevailed 25-18, 25-17, 25-14 in the first-ever men's volleyball matchup with the Eagles. Lakeland notched its first overall win of the season and also improved to 1-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Muskies (1-2 overall, 1-1 NACC) took care of business quickly against the first-year Edgewood program, winning in just over an hour after hitting .333 for the match with 28 kills and just seven errors in 63 attacks.
Misheck led the attack with 12 kills and just one error in 19 swings for a .579 hitting percentage. Ten of his kills came in the first two sets in just 13 attacks, including six in the opening set and four more in the second. He also added a match-high seven digs.
Lakeland received early challenges in all three sets but built a five-point lead by the midway point and gradually pulled away in each set. The Muskies recorded 13 kills in the first set and posted their highest hitting percentage in the third with eight kills and one error in 17 attempts (.412).
Ben Busalacchi (
Fr.-Muskego, Wis.) also finished with six kills and
Colin Kenney (
Fr.-Shorewood, Wis.) added five kills from the middle.
Cameron Ekum (
Sr.-Wales, Wis.) added four kills plus a team-high 22 assists and
Jesse Peters (
So.-Lake Mary, Fla.) was effective on the serve with three of the Muskies' six service aces.
Edgewood (0-4 overall, 0-1 NACC) was led by Christopher Kahler, Nick Klubertanz and Ethan Moll Hind all with five kills each. Klubertanz added six digs and Keegan Talbott finished with 16 assists. The Eagles hit -.062 as a team with 16 kills and 21 errors in 64 attacks.
Lakeland next will face another first-year program on Thursday when it travels to face Wisconsin Lutheran College for a NACC match starting at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
