Ben Busalacchi (
Fr.-Muskego, Wis.) notched his first double-double of the season but the Lakeland University men's volleyball team fell to Rockford University in four sets Tuesday night at Rockford's Seaver Center.
The Regents prevailed in four close sets, taking a 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21 victory for their first in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play this season. Rockford (1-7 overall, 1-6 NACC) also won the first-ever meeting between the two schools in men's volleyball.
Busalacchi finished with 13 kills and 11 digs, setting a collegiate career high for digs and also registering double-digit kills for the second time this season. He accounted for nearly half of the Muskies' 28 kills.
Lakeland (2-6 overall, 2-5 NACC) hit .036 as a team with 28 kills and 24 errors in 110 attacks. The Muskies also registered a season-high eight team blocks, including
Jesse Peters (
So.-Lake Mary, Fla.) and four (one solo, three assisted) and Busalacchi with three (two solo, one assisted).
Rockford also hit a low percentage with 44 kills and 37 errors in 135 attacks for a .052 hitting percentage. The Regents came through late in sets, though, including taking the first set with three of the final four points after the Muskies had rallied to tie it at 22-22. Rockford also scored five of the final six points in the third set and never trailed in the fourth after scoring the first four points.
Maui Viola (
Sr.-Gurnee, Ill.) also posted a season-high 13 digs and
Martin Carrillo (
So.-Mundelein, Ill.) handled setting duties and posted 21 assists.
Tim Matijevic (
Fr.-Palatine, Ill.) and
Matt Misheck (
Jr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) also added five kills each, and Matijevic finished with eight digs and Misheck seven digs plus two service aces.
Connor McNear led Rockford with 13 kills and Jett Stewart added 30 assists, 14 digs and six kills. James Davenport also added eight kills plus 12 digs.
The Muskies are back home Friday when they welcome Concordia University Chicago for a 7 p.m. first serve at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
