Amanda Buckler (
Sr.-Sheridan, Wyo.) scored her third goal in two games but the Lakeland University women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Wisconsin Lutheran College at Taylor Field Wednesday night.
Lakeland (1-1 overall, 1-1 NACC North) had few offensive chances on the night, but the Muskies took advantage of their best opportunity when Buckler turned a free kick deep in Warrior territory into a goal. She lined up from just outside the penalty mark ricocheted the ball off the right post and into the net at 79 minutes, 50 seconds of the match.
The goal was not enough to counter Wisconsin Lutheran (1-1 overall, 1-1 NACC North) scoring twice in the first 20 minutes and holding possession most of the night, outshooting the Muskies 17-5 overall and finishing with a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Warriors also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
WLC struck first just 4:10 into the game on a Katie Wasiak free kick from 35 yards out. Lily Phelps would score on a breakaway 15 minutes later, and the Warriors' 2-0 lead would hold till halftime.
Neither team found the back of the net for the first thirty minutes of the second half until Wasiak scored her second goal of the game at 76:09 on another long kick. Buckler scored her third goal of the season just three minutes later to bring the Muskies within two, but Lakeland would get no closer.
Haley Rich (
So.-West Chicago, Ill.) got the start in goal for the Muskies and recorded three saves before
Erin Tomlinson (
So.-Madison, Wis.) took over in the second half and saved three shots of her own. WLC's Lauren Butler made one save in the win.
After opening with two games at home, the Muskies embark on a three-game road trip, starting this Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at Concordia University Wisconsin.
