MILWAUKEE- Milwaukee School of Engineering hit .397 as a team and the Lakeland University men's volleyball team was defeated in three sets Friday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
The nationally ranked Raiders rolled to a 25-12, 25-19, 25-19 victory to pin the Muskies with their second conference loss this week. Lakeland dropped to 2-4 overall and is 2-3 in NACC play.
MSOE-ranked 15th in the latest NVA/AVCA NCAA Division III Top 15 Coaches Poll-was extremely efficient on the attack, with 30 kills and just seven errors in 58 attack attempts. The Raiders (4-2 overall, 3-1 NACC) also served up 10 aces and added six blocks at the net in bouncing back from a loss to Marian University earlier in the week.
The Muskies were unable to match MSOE's firepower, but did rebound from a poor first set to compete deep into both the second and third sets. Lakeland was the first team to reach 11 in both the second and third sets, but the Raiders gained momentum soon after in both sets.
Ben Busalacchi (
Fr.-Muskego, Wis.) led the Lakeland attack with eight kills and also added five digs.
Cameron Ekum (
Sr.-Wales, Wis.) and
Colin Kenney (
Fr.-Shorewood, Wis.) added four kills each, with Ekum also pacing the team with 18 assists and six digs and tying
Jesse Peters (
So.-Lake Mary, Fla.) for team honors with two aces.
The Muskies hit .099 as a team with 22 kills and 15 errors in 71 swings. Lakeland also finished without a block.
Jacob Sirny led MSOE with eight kills without an error in nine attacks (.889 hitting percentage) and also added six service aces. Austyn Bella and Josh Kleinschmidt added six kills each and Tyler Christenson posted five kills plus nine digs.
Lakeland is back on the court next Friday when it hosts Benedictine University at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gynasium.
