Muskies battle Sabres but fall on Senior Night

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University women's soccer team held strong on defense much of the night but couldn't find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to Marian University Wednesday on Senior Night at Taylor Field.
The Muskies (2-5 overall, 2-5 NACC) allowed just two goals on 18 Marian shots on goal, but the Sabres (3-4 overall, 3-4 NACC) broke through once in each half for the win. The win allowed Marian to move ahead of Lakeland in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference standings and move closer to a berth in the NACC Tournament.

The match was scoreless until the 35th minute, when Peyton Witt fired a shot from the right side that Erin Tomlinson (Jr.-Madison, Wis.) deflected away but lost her balance. Shannon Coughlin reached the rebound on the left side of the goal and passed to Danielle Fluoro, who hit the upper right corner of the net at 34:41 of the match to get on the scoreboard.

The score remained 1-0 into the second half and the 58th minute. Trinity Grimes stole a pass in the midfield area and passed to Coughlin, who quickly fired a 30-yard blast on goal over the head of Faith Turley (Fr.-Lincoln, Ill.) and under the crossbar.

Lakeland had limited offensive chances in the match, with the best one coming in the 81st minute as Desiree Jacobson (Fr.-Lansing, Mich.) made a run on the right side and centered to Marlen Reyes Robelo (Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.), who turned from 15 yards out and fired a shot stopped by Marian keeper Kylie Lange.

Marian had the Muskies on their heels all night, outshooting Lakeland 29-6 and adding nine corner kicks. Tomlinson and Turley split time in goal, with each allowing one goal and recording eight saves apiece. Lange made five saves to record the shutout for the Sabres.

Lakeland honored a pair of seniors before the match, as Amanda Buckler (Sheridan, Wyo.) and Rachel Wilson (Gilbert, Ariz.) played their final home matches.

Lakeland concludes its season on the road this Sunday at 4:30 p.m. against Wisconsin Lutheran College.
